Local moves in California are usually billed by the hour. Under the state’s Maximum Rate Tariff 4, the time you pay for is your loading time, plus unloading time, plus double the driving time from your old home to your new one. This is called double drive time (DDT). You are not charged for the crew’s drive from our yard to your door or back again; the doubled drive time takes the place of those trips.
Example: 2 hours of loading, a 20-minute drive (billed as 40 minutes), and 1.5 hours of unloading comes to 4 hours and 10 minutes. At $150 per hour, that is about $625 before any supplies or extra services.
Separately, California movers must give you a written Not-to-Exceed price before the move: the most you can be charged for the services listed. If you add services on moving day, the mover writes a change order for your approval. Access decides how long a local move takes. The City of San Diego does not issue a general moving-truck parking permit, so we plan where the truck will stand before moving day. For condos and apartments, check with your building or HOA about elevator reservations, move-in hours, and whether they require a certificate of insurance from the mover. Send us the requirements when you book and we will provide what the building needs.
