Ocean Beach was built in the 1920s and 30s for people who walked to the pier. The streets are narrow, most residential blocks are served by rear alleys, and a lot of the housing stock is cottages, duplexes and two- and three-story walk-up apartment buildings with no elevator and no loading zone.
That changes how a move works:
Alley or street? Many OB homes are easier to load from the alley than the front. We check which side has the clearance and the gate before we send the truck.
Truck size. A 26-foot truck doesn’t fit down half the alleys and can’t make the turn at the foot of Newport. We usually run a 16- or 20-foot truck in OB and shuttle to the big truck at Robb Field if the load needs it.
Wednesday is market day. Newport Avenue closes for the farmers market every Wednesday afternoon and evening. Don’t schedule a Newport-adjacent move for a Wednesday. We’ll tell you if you try.
Parking. Street-sweeping days, no-parking zones near the pier, and summer beach crowds that fill every space by 9 a.m. Tell us the block and we’ll cone a spot the evening before.
Stairs. Walk-up buildings mean stair carries. We quote them before we start, so there’s nothing new on the bill.
1. Tell us alley or street. It decides which truck we send and which side we load from.
2. Skip Wednesdays near Newport. Farmers-market closure. Tuesday or Thursday instead.
3. Reserve your curb. We’ll drop cones the night before if you tell us the block. Street-sweeping days count too.
4. Wrap for salt air. Cardboard softens in the marine layer. Plastic-wrap electronics, mattresses and anything upholstered.
5. Move before the beach crowd. Summer weekends, parking within four blocks of the pier is gone by 9 a.m. We start at 7.
6. Measure the staircase. OB stairwells are narrow and turn hard. A sectional or a king box spring may need to come apart. We bring the tools.
